The Holy Stone HS100 is a popular choice and here we’ll examine this model in more detail to help you make your final purchase decision.

Design and Functionality

Holy Stone HS100 Review - A Popular Choice for Hobbyists (Summer 2022)

The Holy Stone HS100 features a durable high-grade plastic construction and cool LED lights

The Holy Stone HS100 is a medium-sized powerful drone that looks similar to the DJI Phantom range at first glance but it lacks some of the advanced features of that series. The overall design is clean, high-grade plastic has been used in the construction and this durable drone weighs in at almost 800g. The is a pretty cheap drone for the feature set, but compromises are inevitable at this price point. This drone has brushed motors which are not as powerful or efficient as the brushless motors found on more expensive drones. These brushed motors also require more maintenance to keep them working at optimal efficiency. Under each rotor, there are colorful LED lights that look cool when flying in low-light or dark conditions, which is possible if you’re an experienced pilot. An underslung camera provides decent visual feedback and you can take still images or video footage of your flight.

Battery and Flight Time

The flight time limit is around 18 minutes which is adequate for an entry-level drone and many competing drones have a flight time of 15 minutes or less. The power source of this extra flight time is a 7.4v 3500 mAh LiPo lithium-ion battery. This is a good example of the latest modern batteries that can retain a charge for far longer than earlier models. There are some LED light indicators on this battery to give visual feedback on the current power level. This battery can be recharged in a few hours and for extended flying sessions, you may want to have a few spares on hand.

Photo and Video Quality

Most drone pilots want a decent camera to take aerial images and video footage. The Holy Stone HS100 is equipped with a 2k camera that is an upgrade from the 1080p supplied with earlier models. When you consider the modest purchasing price, this is pretty impressive and it’s easy to capture plenty of details in your images. This camera has a micro SD card slot for your media storage at the rear and it’s easy to store a lot of images and video. The transmission of the FPV feed is 720p resolution which is sufficient in good flying conditions. If the conditions are bad, there may be a certain level of interference and there is no video or image stabilizer unit. This means that you may experience some shakiness and a little distortion if the weather conditions are not perfect for flying. That being said, this is not a professional grade drone and it would be unreasonable to expect these high-end features at this price point.

Flight Modes

The Holy Stone HS100 has a number of interesting features that make flying a real pleasure. This drone has a useful GPS navigation system, which allows the pilot to carefully track the location throughout the flight. This is a helpful safety feature and the GPS will kick in automatically if the battery level falls to a low level or the drone goes out of range. The drone will attempt to return to the pilot which is an attractive feature for any pilot that has spent a few hours searching for a lost drone.

Another great feature is the “Follow Me” mode which prompts the Holy Stone HS100 to track the movements of the pilot. This captures aerial shots of the pilot as they engage in various activities, such as cycling, running, hiking, and more.

Setting the “Altitude Hold” feature keeps the drone flying at a fixed height which can be useful in certain situations. The drone can be launched quickly when either or both of these features are engaged. A single button push is sufficient to get the drone up into the air quickly. A final useful feature is the “Headless” mode that allows the pilot to control their drone with no orientation problems. This is a great feature for new pilots that can struggle to control a drone until they learn how to orientate the drone properly.

Controller and App

The Holy Stone HS100 has a well-designed remote control unit that looks similar to the DJI Maci unit. This controller has a minimal design with a smartphone attachment in the center but a tablet will not fit in this space. The remote is comfortable to hold and the buttons are clearly identified which is ideal for new pilots. A pair of handles can be pulled out at the bottom of the remote to give the pilot an improved grip. Experienced pilots probably won’t use these handles, but some pilots may appreciate this feature.

This remote control operates up to a transmission range of 600 meters when flying in good conditions. The FPV is a lesser range of up to 350 meters and this is important to bear in mind if you’re recording footage or taking pictures. To get the best performance out of the FPV you need the Holy Stone drone app which can be used on iOS and Android devices. The app works well, the design is clean and easy to navigate. But, at times, the FPV can be choppy, and more regular updates would be helpful.

Dimensions and Weight

The Holy Stone HS100 is one of the larger drones at the upper end of the mid-range size range. The dimensions are 19.68″L x 19.68″W x 6.8″H and when the battery is installed the drone weighs over 700g which the powerful motor can easily handle. The camera can operate up to 720p and the LED lighting system provides a lot of illumination. This allows the user to get reasonable images and video footage with a wide variety of lighting conditions. From an aesthetic perspective, the Holy Stone HS100 is an attractive drone, it has an ergonomic profile and the build quality is excellent.

PROS

CONS

  • The 600-meter flight range and 18-minute flight range is impressive at this price.
  • A maximum altitude of 120 meters is higher than most comparable drones.
  • The powerful motor can handle moderate wind conditions.
  • The well laid out remote control unit is easy for beginners and kids to understand.
  • Some users have reported connectivity issues with this drone.
  • The Holy Stone app needs more regular updates.
  • The 3-6 hour charging time is long by modern standards.

Conclusion

Hopefully, we’ve highlighted in this Holy Stone HS100 review that this drone is a great option if you’re looking to have some fun. The drone has a number of superb features and well laid out controls. Although the recharging time is a little long compared to some other models on the market, this can be negated by having a spare battery or two. This will allow you to use the drone for extended periods and simply set up a recharging schedule, so you’re never without power.
