  • What stands out?
    • Compact size
    • Plenty of advanced features like gesture control, subject tracking and Return to Home
    • Automated shots
    • GPS
    • Detects obstacles up to five meters away
    • Cheaper than most other DJI products
What cons did we manage to find?
    • Video is limited to 1080p
    • Limited range and speed when controlled with phone
    • No support for 24fps or high frame rate capture.
    • App and video editing are a bit hard to use.
    • Pricey remote control

The DJI Spark is one of the best gesture-controlled drones on the market. It has a control distance of 2000 meters, a flight time of 16 minutes, and a max memory card capacity of 64 GB. It also features a 12MP camera, 2-axis mechanical gimbal, FHD video capability, and GPS/GLONASS. It weighs 300g and has a top speed of 31 mph (50 kph) in Sport Mode without wind. The DJI Spark can also be controlled using the DJI Go 4 app, which offers automatic editing templates and an array of filters. It also uses face recognition technology and features ActiveTrack and Stay on Target modes for more advanced tracking.

While the DJI Spark may look and feel a little more clunky compared to other DJI models, this is due to its rigid frame. While the propellers can be folded, you cannot fold the arms out of the way. Although this may seem like a negative, it is actually beneficial if your drone is involved in a collision. However, this is less likely with the Spark, as it can “see” up to 16 feet ahead. It also has technology to stop it from flying towards an object and avoid hitting it.

  • What makes it stand out?
    • Nice battery life
    • Compact and lightweight
    • Very easy to fly

    • Educational
Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?
    • Not wind-resistant
    • Short control distance
    • Controller is not included

The Ryze Tech Tello is a great starter drone for those looking to get into the hobby. It has a control distance of 100 meters, a flight time of 13 minutes, and weighs 80 grams. Plus, it comes with an HD camera that takes 5MP photos and 8m/s max speed. Best of all, the Ryze Tech Tello is designed with students in mind and comes with a mobile programming app that supports Scratch. This allows users to command the drone to perform corresponding movements by dragging coding blocks on their smart mobile device. Additionally, the Ryze Tech Tello has a range finder, barometer, and Vision Positioning System. It also includes propeller guards and collision detection. Lastly, it has low battery protection to keep you from losing your drone.

While the Ryze Tech Tello may lack some of the sophistication of many of the DJI drones, it is a very budget friendly model that is ideal for complete novices. You can still enjoy a 5mp camera and 720p video, but the model has auto take off and landing. This makes it really easy to get up into the air and start getting some drone experience. And on the off chance that you do crash, you won’t be as upset as you would be if you’d paid for a far more expensive model.

  • What makes it stand out?
    • Excellent for beginners
    • Easy to fly and control
    • Decent camera
    • FPV capability
    • Comes with propeller guards
    • Affordable price
Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?
    • Not really wind-resistant
    • No camera stabilization
    • Not good for experienced flyer
    • Quite short control range
    • Lacks GPS and other advanced features
    • Real time video is a bit shaky

The Altair AA108 is a great value pick for those looking for a quality smartphone-controlled drone. With its headless mode and altitude hold features, it’s easy to fly for new users, while the custom route mode lets advanced users get creative with their flying. The drone also has a custom route mode, which lets you draw a flight line on your mobile screen and the drone will fly according to your flight line. Finally, the drone has a 720p real-time FPV mode, which lets you see what the drone is seeing in real time. This is great for getting aerial shots and videos.

Unlike many of the drones on our list, the Altair AA108 is remarkably easy to use straight out of the box. Simply slide a battery into the compartment and you’re ready to go. There is no need to download any programs or deal with a steep learning curve. However, this doesn’t mean that the AA108 lacks sophisticated features, as there is a 720p HD camera and 120º wide angle lens. The intuitive controls make it easy for even novices to enjoy flying and take some great shots.

  • Why did it make our list?
    • 4K video capability
    • Easy to control and use
    • Compact and lightweight
    • No FAA registration needed
    • Excellent autonomous features and modes
    • Upgraded transmission
What is not ideal about it?
    • Lacks object tracking
    • A bit expensive
    • Not good for night-time use

In our opinion, the DJI Mini 2 is one of the best smartphone-controlled mini drones on the market today. It’s small, lightweight, and very easy to control. It also has a number of features that make it perfect for both hobbyists and professionals. The DJI Fly app is very easy to use and lets you add filters and soundtracks to your videos before you share them with the world.

The DJI Mini 2 has a control distance of 10,000 meters, making it one of the longest-range drones on the market. It also has a max battery life of 31 minutes, so you can fly it for longer periods of time. And if you’re looking to capture some amazing footage, the DJI Mini 2 comes equipped with a 3-axis motorized gimbal.

While the DJI Mini 2 may be more costly compared to the Mini SE, this is reflected in the camera. While the Minin SE has a 2.7k resolution camera, the Mini 2 can shoot 4k Ultra HD video at a rate of 30 frames per second. It can also shoot 12-megapixel photos in both JPG and DNG RAW formats. Additionally, while the Mini SE does not have digital zoom, the Mini 2 has 4x digital zoom capability, so you can shoot close up details while remaining at a safe distance.

    Things to Consider

Are you looking for the best smartphone-controlled drones? If so, you’re in the right place. In this buying guide, we’ll help you find the best drone for your needs.

    Types of Drones

There are three main types of drones: quadcopters, hexacopters, and octocopters. Quadcopters are the most common type of drone. They have four propellers and are typically smaller and less expensive than other types of drones. Hexacopters have six propellers and are typically larger and more expensive than quadcopters. Octocopters have eight propellers and are the largest and most expensive type of drone.

How to Choose the Best Smartphone-Controlled Drone

When it comes to finding the best smartphone-controlled drones, there are a few things you need to consider.

    Control App

5 Best Smartphone-Controlled Drones Around - From Fun to Function (Spring 2024)

The best smartphone-controlled drones come with very user-friendly apps

The first thing you need to consider is the control app. The benefits of apps over traditional controllers are that they’re typically more intuitive to use and offer a greater level of control. The best drones have a user-friendly control app that makes flying a breeze.

    Flight Time

The next thing you need to consider is the drone’s flight time. Most drones can fly for around 15 minutes on a single charge. If you’re looking for a drone that can stay in the air for longer periods of time, you’ll need to invest in one with a higher-capacity battery.

    Camera

Another thing to consider is the camera. Many drones come equipped with built-in cameras, while others allow you to attach your own camera.

    Control Distance

The control distance is another important thing to consider. The best drones have a long control distance, allowing you to fly them further away from you. Some of the best drones under $1,000 have a control distance of up to 10 kilometers.

    Size and Weight

Another thing to consider is the size and weight of the drone. The best drones are small and lightweight, making them easy to transport and store. However, if a drone weighs more than 250 grams, it will require FAA registration in the USA.

    Intelligent Modes

The best drones come with a variety of intelligent modes like Follow Me, Return to Home, and Headless Mode. These modes make it easier for you to fly the drone and get the most out of your flying experience.

    Sensors

5 Best Smartphone-Controlled Drones Around - From Fun to Function (Spring 2024)

Smartphone-controlled drones can hold their altitude well and avoid obstacles thanks to the built-in sensors

Most good drones come with sensors that allow them to hold their altitude and navigate around obstacles.

    GPS

GPS capability is a good feature if you want a drone that can hold its position and return home if it loses signal. Drones with GPS allow you to mark a destination on the map and the drone will fly there autonomously.

    Speed and Agility

The best drones are fast and agile, making them fun to fly. However, if you’re looking for a drone to take professional photographs or videos, you’ll need a slower and more stable drone.

    Battery

One more thing you need to consider is the battery. Most drones come with a rechargeable battery, but some drones require disposable batteries.

    Safety Features

Most drones come with a number of safety features like return-to-home and low-voltage alerts. Many of them also come with propeller guards, which help to protect the propellers in the event of a crash.

Propeller guards are especially important for beginner pilots, as they help to reduce the chances of damaging the drone.

Some drones even have removable propeller guards, which allow you to fly the drone without them if you want more speed and agility.

    Price

Finally, you’ll need to consider the price of the drone. The best drones cost between $500 and $2,000. However, there are also some decent drones available for less than $100. Check out our reviews of the best drones under $200 and the best drones under $1000 to see the difference.

    FAQ

To control a drone with a smartphone, you need to install the control app and connect your phone to the drone’s Wi-Fi network. Once the connection is established, you can use the control app to fly the drone. The control app will allow you to control the direction of the drone, as well as its height and speed.

No, you do not need an internet connection to fly your drone. However, some drones come with a feature called “Follow Me,” which requires an internet connection to work. If you want to use this feature, you will need an internet connection.

There are no major dangers associated with flying a drone with a smartphone. However, you should always take precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Make sure you read the drone’s instruction manual before flying, and always obey all local laws and regulations.

There is no definitive answer to this question. Some people prefer to use a phone because it is smaller and more portable, while others prefer to use a tablet because it has a bigger screen. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide which device you prefer to use.
